OKLAHOMA CITY — All episodes from legendary University of Oklahoma head football coach Barry Switzer’s show “The Spirit of Champions” are now available on one of the Oklahoma Historical Society’s YouTube channels.
Switzer and Karim E. Karim, who produced his coach’s show, created seven episodes of “The Spirit of Champions” in the early 1990s. Switzer interviewed famous actors, professional athletes and movie stars who credited sports as a big part of their backgrounds. Interviews include Bart Conner, Nadia Comăneci, Gary Busey, Caitlyn Jenner (then known publicly as Bruce Jenner), Nolan Ryan, Tommy Lasorda, Burt Reynolds, O. J. Simpson, Cathy Rigby, Arnold Palmer and Troy Aikman.
Switzer was the head football coach at the University of Oklahoma from 1973 to 1989. He led the team to three national championships (1974, 1975, 1985). He was the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 1994 to 1997 and led them to the Super Bowl title in 1996.
“I am excited to partner with the Oklahoma Historical Society to make these shows available to the public,” said Switzer. “I think people will enjoy watching these stars share how sports helped them achieve success in life. I know I had a great time visiting with each one of them.”
In addition to the original shows, the OHS recently filmed a special introduction by Switzer about the shows, plus stories about each interview.
“Coach Switzer donated his film and video collection to the OHS more than 20 years ago, and we are honored to help preserve these moments from his incredible career,” said Chad Williams, director of research for the Oklahoma Historical Society. “The OHS would like to give a special shoutout to Karim E. Karim, who produced and directed the original shows in the 1990s, and Randy Richardson, who filmed and edited the 2026 restoration of ‘The Spirit of Champions.’”
